Henri Labrouste exhibition_MOMA

The reading room of the library is a world in itself. Cut off from the bustling life of the city, this refuge dedicated to study is a space of great richness. The books lining the walls are, in labrouste's words, "its most beautiful ornament." Twin barrel vaults divide the room into two naves held aloft by a delicate row of long, slender cast-iron colonettes, which draw the eyes up and toward the sky, visible through lofty clerestory windows that provide ample light from all sides.

도서관의 서가는 그 자체가 하나의 세계이다. 도시의 분주한 생활로부터 분리시켜 공부에 전념할수 있게 하는 피난처인 이곳은 위대한 풍요로움의 공간이다. 벽에 일렬로 배치된 책들을 labrouste는  "공간의 가장 아름다움 장식이다." 라고 말한다. 두개의 닮은꼴의 반원통형 둥근 천장이 공간을 두개의 홀로 나누고 있으며, 이 홀은 길고 날씬한 주철 기둥의 섬세한 배열에 의해 높이 들어 올려져 있다. 이것은 우리의 눈은 위로 하늘을 향하게 만들고  각 측면에 배치된 고딕의 수직 창들을 통해 찬란한 빛을 드러낸다.

앙리 라브루스트 전시에서, 뉴욕 모마 미술관
