Minibar_Minneapolis-St Paul airport/ 미니바_미네아폴리스 공항

One of the Minneapolis-St Paul airport projects, which I designed at ICRAVE, was completed.

Minibar's concept was inspired by Minnesota nature and it creates comfort and fresh zone with contemporary design language. As a central focal point at the airport hold room, the centered free standing bar wrapped with custom mosaic glass tiles with green, yellow and white and it creates sculptural looking. Floating concave canopy with fiberglass panels reflects greenery patterns from bar and floor. 

The experience of space could make you inside another world at the airport. It would be different when you are sitting inside the bar from looking at the bar outside. Opening between the bar and canopy allows to see your gate and outside of window, so you can keep to watch your gate and flight status. Also, iPads for ordering food and browsing the web, and charging stations at every seat provide more convenience to airport users.

I wanted people could enjoy their time and experience special moment at the bar while waiting to board. I hope I can sit at the bar sometime soon and want to see how people experience this space.

아이크레이브에서 디자인했던 미네아폴리스 공항 프로젝트 중에 미니바가 완성되었다.

디자인 컨셉은 미네소타의 자연을 담아낼 수 있는 공간으로 공항이 그 지역성을 대변함과 동시에 자연이 주는 편안하고 상쾌함을 줄 수 있는 공간을 현대적으로 풀어내는 것이었다.

게이트의 대기공간 중앙에 위치한 바는 초록, 노랑 그리고 흰색으로 주문 제작된 유리 모자이크 타일로 만들어진 패턴으로 마감되어 공간 안에 하나의 조각과 같은 오브젝트로 보여진다. 천장에 떠있는 유리섬유 패널로 만들어진 삼차원 곡면의 캐노피는 바와 바닥의 모자이크의 타일 패턴을 반사하여, 바에 앉아있는 동안 천장에 반사된 이미지와 모자이크 타일로 이루어진 녹색의 공간에서 또 다른 세계를 경험할 수 있도록 하였다. 이 곳에서 비행기를 기다리는 시간이 지루하지 않고 즐길 수 있는 시간될지라도, 그러는 와중에 비행기를 놓쳐서는 안될 것이다. 바와 떠있는 캐노피의 열린 사이와 원형의 좌석 배치는 각 게이트의 상황과 창 밖에 비행기의 상태를 계속 관찰할 수 있게끔 하는 것이 미니 바의 평면과 바의 구조의 의도라고 할 수 있다.

또한 아이 패드 태블렛의 음식 주문과 인터넷 이용, 각 좌석의 충전 시스템은 계속 늘어나는 공항 이용객에게 편리성을 제공하고 있다.  

디자인 공모에서 당선된 후 한 명의 클라이언트가 이 미니바를 보고 "버섯 바가 맘에 든다"라고 했다는데, 어찌보면 버섯 모양을 닮은 것 같기도 하다. 조만간 직접 내가 저 바 안에 앉아서 나의 상상과 디자인 의도가 잘 이루어 졌는지 확인 할 수 있는 기회가 오기를 바란다.

Sukkah City

지난 달 New York에 Sukkah city공모전이 있었다. 유대교의 축제기간에 설치되는 Sukkot을 종교적인 차원을 넘어서, 현대시대에 맞는 의미, 재료, 구조 등을 재해석하고 축제 기간 동안에 설치될 임시 구조물을 디자인 하는 공모전이었다. 무엇보다 공모전 접수비가 없고, 당선이 되면 Union Square Park에 실제로 지어진다는 것이 뉴욕의 화창한 여름 주말을 반납할만한 매력적인 요소였다.

Some of the rules:
1. the structure must be temporary
2. have at least two and a half walls
3. be big enough to contain a table
4. have a roof made of shade-providing organic materials through which one can see the stars
5. a 27 x 27 x 38-inch minimum volume
6. a maximum height of 30 feet
7. for walls that cannot sway more than one handbreadth
8. for a mineral and botanical menagerie of construction materials

Sukka City suggests GreenNYC as a Bike city.

Contemporary interpretation of Sukka in New York City is a city hut where bicyclists and walkers can gather and rejoice together as a city shelter in sustainable way.

Cycling is booming in New York. Commuter cycling has increased by 66% over the last two years with over 100 miles of car-free greenways throughout the City. Cycling as an environmentally- sustainable form of transportation, it reduces congestion, clean the air and make people healthier. With the expansion of the bicyclists and its route, the need for convenient and bicycle friendly street, places is growing in an environmentally-sustainable way. Bike Sukka provides a bike rack and shelter which bicyclists take a rest and recharged on the way to their destinations. It can be public space not only for bicyclists, also but also walkers and encourage people enjoy to bike as a wonderful and sustainable way.

Bike Sukka is made of bamboo plywood which is 100% natural materials. The structure of bike Sukka is assembled with CNC cutting plywood and joint of bolts, so it can be disassembled and reassembled easily anywhere. Bamboo plywood panels are composed of various shapes of profile and each profile are fitted to each other in one panel with less residuum. One continuous vertical profile can be roof, wall, seating and bike racks at the same time. The locations of the Bike Sukka can be center of City, entry of bridges and parks.

구조물이 요구하는 기본적으로 위의 사항들을 충족시키되, 각 요소들을 재 해석하는 것에서 따라 요구사항 또한 그에 따라 이해 되게끔 하는데서 작업을 시작하였다. 벽과 지붕의 경계를 없애고, 구조물이 가구 자체가 되게끔 하는, 벽과 지붕, 가구와 구조물에 대한 관계를 재정의 하였다. 무엇보다 주어진 금액 안에서, 일주일 안에 설치 하여야 한다는 것이 가장 큰 숙제였다.

Sukkacity를 Greencity로 가기 위한 하나의 방안으로 Bikecity를 제안하였다. 현재 뉴욕시가 에너지 절약과 공해없는 도시를 외치며, 자전거루트를 늘리고, 자전거통행 인구를 확장시키고자 하는 것에 맞추어서, Sukka city는자전거 정류장이며 쉼터라 할 수 있다. 자전거 이용자들의 편의 시설이 됨과 동시에, 일반인들에게는 쉼터가 되며, 이를 통해 자전거 인구를 확장시키게 된다.

Go green by Bikecity

각 slat의 형태에 의해 내부에서는 의자가 되고 외부에서는 자전거 랙이 된다. 또한 재료를 경제적으로 이용하기 위해 판의 형태가 맞물리게 하여 plywood에서 재료의 손실이 최대한 줄인다. 수직의 판들은 원형으로 배치되고 링 형태의 수평 판에 의해 끼워져서 고정되며, 볼트와 클립이 세부 조인트가 된다. 공모전의 요구사항에 의해 bamboo plywood를 사용하였으나, 아이디어 전달에 주 목적을 두었기에, 실제 거리 구조물로 설치될 경우에는 장기, 그리고 공용 시설에 적합한 재료와 조인트가 고려되어야 할 것이다. 이는 뉴욕 도심의 공원, 긴 자전거 도로상의 도심 안에, 긴 주행이 있는 브루클린 다리 근교에 설치 될 수 있다.

그러고 보니 bird cage의 또 다른 버전인 듯.
최종 12명의 당선자가 발표되었고, 1등의 작품만을 보았다.

다음의 작업할 때는 이번처럼 5분전에 제출하고 오타를 발견하지 못하는 실수 없이, 그리고 더 좋은 아이디어를 내자 스스로 위로한다. 흑~ 다른 이들은 어떠한 아이디어를 내었는지 9월 브라이언 파크에 실제 지어진 작품을 보기를 기대하면서....
